A Date Night with the Olders.....

Kevin and I try to be careful to give our "olders" (Elizabeth & Sam) the time they need with us so they won't feel that the "youngers" (Grace & Bella) are getting all attention. We hope that each of our children know that they are a "part" of this family and not the "center" of it. Ultimately, we strive to impart to them that God is the center of our lives and not the other way around. :)

So, Kevin and I took the "olders" out to dinner last night to visit while the "youngers" had time with one of their favorite sitters Anne. While we were waiting for our dinner to arrive, we played a game of trivia which was printed on the restaurant advertisement placard. Too fun!

Then, we went to a video store to try and pick out a movie. Let's just say that it is beyond difficult to find a selection we could all agree on. Then, I remembered that some friends had suggested a movie about an inner city chess team. Kevin texted his buddy and found that the movie was called "Knights of South Bronx".

After renting the movie & picking out some treats, we went Kevin's office to watch the DVD. It was a feel-good movie that we all really loved.

All in all, it was a good night with our olders!

And, to brag a bit on the olders....I wanted to share that both Elizabeth and Sam garnered some honors these past weeks:

Elizabeth "starred" in all three music performances at the State competition--a clarinet solo, a woodwinds trio, and a girls vocal ensemble.

Sam placed second in the year-end chess tournament where he has been attending chess club all year. Here he is with his coaches and the first place person:

Woo Hoo, way to go "olders"! So proud of you both....

Love, the Oldest

  2. Please send my congratulations to your "olders". Their hard work deserves to be recognized. My "olders" (17 & 19) are glad to know there are other teens out there with the same high standards and expectations.

p.s. Thanks for the movie referral, we are constantly looking for good movies to get from Netflix (I gave up on our local video store last summer).

  3. Sounds like a fun evening! GREAT idea to single out the "olders". They are teenagers, but even if they don't act like it, they still want mom and dad's attention! ;o) Sounds like you are well aware of that. :o) Doesn't surprise me that your "olders" are award winners!! They are GREAT kids! :o)

    Hugs from Florida!!

  4. Too funny, we just started calling our family the"olders" and the "youngers".:) We also have tried hard to balance time with our older children. It sounds like you had a good time.
Congrats to Sam and Elizabeth! I am constantly amazed at how much we have in common! My kids are musical, and my boys love chess, too!

  5. I think that's sweet that you and Kevin single out the older ones for 'their time'. That shows how important they are to you. I bet if everyone did this as their kids grew up, there would be alot more love and respect between family members than there is nowadays...

You have much to be proud of, and here is a little preview of the future...I think they will rise and call you 'Blessed', mom!

Have a fabulous Mothers Day, sounds like you really deserve it!! :D Love Always...
